RJLG Partners with Chemistry Program for High School Students top

RJ Lee Group (RJLG) is one of several local businesses that has partnered with Duquesne University to support a program that provides research opportunities to outstanding local high school students. Project SEED, which is in its fourth year at Duquesne, exposes economically disadvantaged high school students to hands-on research as they work one-on-one with faculty and mentors at Duquesne. The program operates under the guidelines of the American Chemical Society, but depends mainly on donations from local companies.

Through its participation, RJLG is helping to nurture and develop a new generation of scientists. This year, each student is working on his or her own cutting-edge research projects under the supervision of their faculty mentors. For example, one student is examining a more energy-efficient way to prepare inter-metallic compounds, which can be utilized in solders and as superconductors, using a microwave. Another student is working on a computational chemistry problem, studying protein-drug interactions that could be important to the pharmaceutical industry.

Students, who receive stipends for their work, also have opportunity to compete for $5,000 college scholarships. Students from the Duquesne program have won scholarships for the last two years. The eight-week program, which wrapped up in August, puts students in the lab or in the field Monday through Friday, eight hours a day.

“The key is they get in–depth experience,” said Dr. Jennifer Aitken, project coordinator and assistant professor of chemistry. “They learn how to use equipment that some undergraduates don’t even get to use. They make contacts within the field by participating on the field trips, and they have the opportunity to gain financial aid.”

Criminal Forensics
RJLG’s Elena Foster, Criminal Forensics Department Manager, has accepted an invitation from the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) and its Investigative and Forensic Sciences Division (IFSD) to be a presenter at the Advanced Regional Cold Case Trainings.

These trainings are delivered to cold case investigators and a select number of prosecutors from around the country. The 30 minute presentation is entitled, “Cold Cases and the Crime Laboratory; It’s 2007, What Can We Do For You Now?” It will cover non-DNA disciplines, mostly notably trace evidence. Elena will discuss not only the value of trace evidence in cold cases, but what new technologies may be used if evidence of this type is found, some of which may be decades old.

The training will be held in San Diego, CA, December 5th-7th.

From the President:
Dr. Richard J. Lee

Robert J. LeeIt is hard for me to figure out where the time goes.  Each year, the seasons slip by faster and faster.   Here in Southwestern Pennsylvania, the hot and humid days of summer merge into the crisp and cool nights of fall… with leaves of glorious colors that seem to fade in a heartbeat.  Change: always there, sometimes painful, never certain, often unnoticed until we take the time to reflect.

I want to note a number of changes within RJ Lee Group (RJLG) this year, including new communication tools, the expansion of criminal forensics, biomedical and pharmaceutical services and the opportunities in the hospital health care initiative.
